Beginning
stages of a carving

Draper & Company has produced fireplace mantels, over-mantels and related detail for over 30 years, selling primarily to the trade: Interior Designers, Architects and prestigious retail purveyors.  The magazine cover shown on the bottom right dates back to 1986.

Our company began as a small workshop and remains so to this day.  We are not a factory.  Our carvings are executed by us, with mallet and gauge, in the same manner practiced by fine craftsmen for centuries.

Experience has shown us that stock mantel sizes seldom work, therefore all of our mantels are custom made to to our clients' specifications.  We do not charge extra for this service except in rare instances when a mantel is considerably over-sized, and even then the surcharge is minimal.  As part of our service, we work very closely with our clients in helping to determine the exact measurements required for a mantel project and we are readily available to answer any questions you may have.

In choosing a design for your mantel piece you are by no means limited to the models we have shown. We are always happy to work from your own designs or from pictures you may provide.  We can also modify many of our designs to suit you.  Styles, of course, go in and out of fashion.  We hold to the philosophy that you cannot go wrong when you adhere to design elements and classic proportions that have stood the test of time. Many of our professional clients would seem to agree as they have often chosen our historically accurate designs for contemporary settings.

Most American and English wooden period mantels were constructed in pine. We use American Eastern White Pine unless you specify otherwise.  We will work in any available wood species you choose.

fête accomplie
